- Ernest/Jack Worthing, J.P. : Ernest ,whose real name is Jack, is the protagonist of the story, abandoned at a railroad station, as a child Jack has no connection with his childhood which plays a huge role in the plot when he asks Gwendolen to marry him and her mother says no because of his lack of family which Lady Bracknell believes is socially unacceptable. He is also the guardian of his ward, Cecily and pretends to have a brother named Ernest. He creates a fake brother so that he can temporarily escape from society.
- Algernon Moncrieff (Algy) : Ernest’s best friend and Cecily’s love interest. He creates a character name Bunbury so that he can also escape from social obligations and is in a deep amount of debt. Known to be charming, rebellious, and mischievous he travels to the country and poses as Ernest , jack’s fake brother, so he can meet Cecily. He is also cousins with Gwendolen.
- Cecily Cardew : Jack’s ward who plays as Algy’s love interest. She is a young girl who is the granddaughter of the man who adopted Jack. She’s imaginative, creative, and records all her thoughts in a journal. And is intrigued with the name Ernest, which is what immediately attracts her to Algy when he is pretending to be Jack’s brother.
- Gwendolen Fairfax : Algy’s cousin, daughter to Lady Bracknell, and Jack’s love interest. She is flirtatious, stylish, and an intellectual. She is also in love with the name Ernest and takes authority in her and Jack’s relationship.
- Miss Prism : Cecily’s governess. She tutors Cecily and focuses on unyielding views on morality and properness. Because of this she cannot take action on her relationship because he interest in Dr. Chausible is ridiculous.
- Lady Bracknell : Gwendolen’s mother is judgmental, snobbish, and cares greatly about her image. She cares greatly about the upper class Victorian social views.
- Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D. : He is the rector on Jack’s estate and is the love interest to Miss Prism but must hide his feelings due to his position in the church..
